US Premiere of Tansy Davies's <em>kingpin</em> at Azusa Pacific University

The Azusa Pacific University Symphony Orchestra performs the US premiere of Tansy Davies’s 2007 chamber orchestra work kingpin on February 5 under the direction of conductor Christopher Russell. The performance takes place at the Haugh Performing Arts Center in Glendora, CA. 

Davies drew inspiration from a (possibly apocryphal) story about automobile tycoon Henry Ford. The results of a scrap yard survey he commissioned revealed the kingpin as the only part of the Model T that never failed—axles, brakes, pistons were all liable to malfunction. Davies sought to evoke “the strong and trustworthy heart of a machine” with the chamber orchestra; “not a vision of gleaming steel and laser precision, but one of grey steam and black oil, metal teeth spinning and biting, and power forced out through circular motion.”

Also this month, the Birmingham Contemporary Music Group present Davies’s Dark Ground, for solo percussion, at the United Kingdom’s City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra Centre on February 6, as well as grind show (for chamber ensemble and electronics) and loure (for solo violin) at the University of Birmingham on February 20, led by Richard Baker.
