US Premiere of Stefano Gervasoni’s <em>Dir – in dir</em> with Ekmeles and Mivos Quartet

The contemporary vocal ensemble ekmeles joins the Mivos String Quartet for the US premiere of Stefano Gervasoni’s Dir – in dir on May 21 at the DiMenna Center’s Benzaquen Hall.

Dir – in dir, Gervasoni's transformative 40-minute work for vocal sextet and string sextet, was premiered in 2011 at the Wittener Tage für Neue Kammermusik by the Exaudi vocal ensemble and L’Instant Donné. The work is based on thirteen couplets from Angelus Silesius’s 16th-century poetic epic Der Cherubinischer Wandersmann (The Cherubic Pilgrim). Gervasoni describes the work: 

Dir - in dir is like a journey, or more specifically, a path, a sound rite, to the rediscovery of a new home. This is an upward path, leading to a possible deity or a kingdom of the beyond, perceptible only from the inside, and penetrating the innermost depths of the soul.

The Independent’s Andy Gill calls the piece “an unnerving but oddly soothing work, for which the composer’s image of an 'infinity of leaves and thorns conceals all possible answers' offers an apt metaphor.”
