U.S. Premiere of Sir Peter Maxwell Davies <em>Trojan Games</em> by the New Juilliard Ensemble

The New Juilliard Ensemble, conducted by Joel Sachs, presents the U.S. premiere of Sir Peter Maxwell Davies Trojan Games at the Peter Jay Sharp Theatre in New York on September 26.

Sir Peter Maxwell Davies first conceived of this work in 2012 while living in a small tower overlooking Grotte di Bastro, near Pitigliano, Italy, and reading Virgil's Aeneid. He writes:

After a reading of the Aeneid of Virgil, I based this work on Book 5, with its very detailed account of Aeneas’ ritualistic sequence of physical contests – more intense and injurious than anything in our comparatively restrained times. Before each ‘contest’, in which the instrumentalists vie with each other for sheer virtuosity, there is a slow invocation to the Gods, or a processional, and to finish, a hymn of thanksgiving.

The program also includes the U.S. premiere of Polish composer and pianist Zygmunt Krauze’s Five Songs for baritone and chamber ensemble. The work, influenced by the poetry of Tadeusz Różewicz, receives a performance by baritone Szymon Komasa.
