US Premiere of Peter Eötvös's There’s a taxi waiting for Chekhov, but he’d rather go on foot
Apr. 05, 2007
The U.S. premiere of Hungarian composer Peter Eötvös’s There’s a taxi waiting for Chekhov, but he’d rather go on foot, features at the third annual New York recital of Franco-Belgian pianist Carine Gutlerner on April 19 at Merkin Concert Hall. The title derives from Eötvös experience composing his first opera Three Sisters, based on Chekhov’s play. Having felt very close to the writer, Eötvös would imagine that he could just meet him at any time on the street, waiting for a taxi or walking away. In this piece one can hear Chekhov walking slowly away, lost in his thoughts.
This summer Mr. Eötvös will also be taking up the position of Composer-in-Residence at the 2007 Ojai Music Festival. The festival takes place from June 7 – 10 under the music direction of Pierre-Laurent Aimard who was, with Mr. Eötvös, a member of the Ensemble InterContemporain, the Paris-based contemporary ensemble founded by Pierre-Boulez.
