US Premiere of Matthias Pintscher's <em>mar'eh</em> with National Symphony Orchestra

Matthias Pintscher leads violinist Karen Gomyo and the National Symphony Orchestra in the US premiere of his mar’eh at the Kennedy Center in Washington, DC on February 19. Mar’eh was commissioned by the Lucerne Festival and written for Julia Fischer, who gave the world premiere in 2011.

Titled after the Hebrew word for “face” or “sign”, mar’eh combines intricate solo passages with unusual extended techniques for orchestra. The composer states:

I have tried to shape the whole [work] in a very song-like fashion, so that the violin starts at the beginning and draws a line – or its vision – through to the end in the most varied registers, often quite high where it can only be continued in harmonics. I wanted this continual pacing out of a line. In the attempt to create horizontal arcs of sound, I was concerned with always giving the sound a direction in perspective.

The program, which also features Pintscher leading the orchestra in Fauré’s Pelléas et Mélisande Suite and Ravel’s Daphnis et Chloé, runs February 19, 20, and 21 at the Kennedy Center Concert Hall.
