US Premiere of Luciano Berio's <em>Calmo</em> with Los Angeles Philharmonic

On March 10, Gustavo Dudamel leads the Los Angeles Philharmonic New Music Group in the long awaited US premiere of Luciano Berio’s Calmo, for mezzo-soprano and ensemble. Berio composed the work in 1974 to honor the memory of his close friend and collaborator, Bruno Maderna, who worked with Berio to found the groundbreaking Studio di Fonologia in 1955. The work explores many of the texts that Maderna set to music during his lifetime, including those by Homer, Sanguineti, and 13th-century Persian poet, Saadi Shirazi. 

Now, nearly forty years after its completion, Calmo receives its US premiere at Walt Disney Concert Hall, where Swedish mezzo-soprano Charlotte Hellekant joins the New Music Group to perform the work’s intense vocal lamentation. The performance takes place as part of the Los Angeles Philharmonic’s Green Umbrella Series alongside works by Luigi Nono, Luca Francesconi and Giacinto Scelsi.
