US Premiere of Lili Boulanger's Marche gaie, Arranged for Small Orchestra by Robert Orledge

May. 01, 2021

The Winston-Salem Symphony, under the direction of Timothy Redmond, performs the US premiere of Lili Boulanger's Marche gaie, arranged for small orchestra by Robert Orledge. The work was originally composed for chamber orchestra, but as Lili Boulanger's own orchestration has not been found, British scholar Robert Orledge created an orchestral version from the composer's short score.

Dedicated to the composer's friend Jeanne Leguyes, daughter of the French politician Georges Leygues, this work was likely composed in honor of Jeanne's wedding in 1916. Marche gaie alludes to Mendelssohn's famous Wedding March and is believed to have been paired with Lili Boulanger's March funèbre, a work that has not yet resurfaced.
