US Premiere of Jörg Widmann's Trauermarsch at the San Francisco Symphony

On June 23, Michael Tilson Thomas leads the San Francisco Symphony in the US premiere of Jörg Widmann’s piano concerto Trauermarsch with soloist Yefim Bronfman at Davies Symphony Hall. Additional performances take place June 24 and 25.

Trauermarsch was jointly commissioned by the Berlin Philharmonic, who gave its premiere in 2014, along with the San Francisco Symphony and Toronto Symphony Orchestra. The work continues Widmann’s engagement with traditional musical forms, devising unique solutions for the genre’s inherent challenges. Of composing the work, Widmann writes:

It was like euphoria, nothing I had planned: Every gesture of the piano evoked a comment in the orchestra. Strangely, the passages which I thought needed to see the piano alone … they never came. But I struggled for the best possible presence of the piano sound. This is why the orchestral part shows extremely particular dynamic markings. Eventually, only seconds before the end of the concerto, a catastrophic event occurs and the piano is overrun by the orchestra. But that is, of course, a matter of dramaturgy.

Following the US premiere, Bronfman tours Trauermarsch throughout North America in performances with the Boston Symphony Orchestra (October 6-8) and The Cleveland Orchestra (January 12 and 14, 2017), with the Canadian premiere on March 4, 2017 with the Toronto Symphony Orchestra.
