US Premiere of Chaya Czernowin's <em>The Quiet</em> at DePaul University

Michael Lewanski leads the DePaul Concert Orchestra in the US premiere of Chaya Czernowin’s The Quiet at the DePaul University Concert Hall on March 12.

Commissioned by Bayerischer Rundfunk/musica viva, The Quiet was premiered in Munich in 2011 with Brad Lubman conducting the Bavarian Radio Symphony Orchestra. Czernowin composed the work following her observation of a snowstorm from her window at night “as the flakes danced in the weak light of the lamp outside.” She elaborates:

The desire to make the storm audible was the starting point for a journey that morphed into many other different strange, close, and distant storms. These storms constantly evolved from natural occurrences into far away atmospheres surrounding human activity, before returning to natural realms.

On February 24, Czernowin was awarded the 2016 Heidelberger Artist Prize. The award ceremony took place in Heidelberg, Germany with a performance of Czernowin’s White Wind Waiting for guitar and orchestra. Guitarist Stephan Schmidt joined the Heidelberg Philharmonic Orchestra for the performance, which was conducted by Johannes Kalitzke.
