US Premiere of Carl Davis's Aladdin at Houston Ballet
Jan. 24, 2014

On February 20, the Houston Ballet opens its production of Aladdin, featuring the American premiere of Carl Davis’s score, at the Wortham Theater Center in Houston, Texas. The production, with choreography by David Bintley, is co-produced by Birmingham Royal Ballet and Houston Ballet Foundation.
Composed in 1999, Aladdin was commissioned by the Scottish Ballet, which gave the premiere in 2001 at the Edinburgh Festival Theatre with choreography by Robert Cohan and conducted by Carl Davis. Having worked together previously on the ballet Cyrano, David Bintley mounted a new production of Aladdin with the National Ballet of Japan in 2008. The Bintley production, which opens in Houston, includes scenery by Dick Bird and costume design by Sue Blane. Additional performances continue through March 2.
In a review of Bintley’s production, Laura Thompson wrote for "The Telegraph":
A full-blown piece of three-act splendour… it looks absolutely astonishing; in fact its real star is set designer Dick Bird, who creates scene after scene of retina-ravishing beauty… Carl Davis’s supple, fluid score resonates with Eastern influence.
Additionally this month, two of Davis’s film scores receive performances in the US. On February 14, conductor Kirk Trevor leads the Indianapolis Chamber Orchestra to accompany a screening of Frank Capra’s 1926 silent film, The Strong Man, at the Indianapolis Museum of Art. Three silent films by Charlie Chaplin, with scores by Carl Davis – The Floorwalker, The Count, and Easy Streets – receive a live-to-projection performance on February 22 at the Eclipse Theater in Beloit, Wisconsin. The performance features the Beloit Janesville Symphony Orchestra led by conductor Robert Tomaro.
