Performance of Anders Hillborg's Exquisite Corpse

Nov. 01, 2018

Performance of Anders Hillborg's Exquisite Corpse

On November 30, Eivind Gullberg Jensen leads the Oregon Symphony Orchestra in a performance of Anders Hillborg's Exquisite Corpse. Taking place at the iconic Arlene Schnitzer Concert Hall, Exquisite Corpse will receive additional performances on December 1-3.

Exquisite Corpse was commissioned by the Stockholm Philharmonic and dedicated to Alan Gilbert, who directed its world premiere with the Royal Stockholm Philharmonic in December 2002. Writing about this work, Bernard Holland of The New York Times noted: "The title is a literary reference to the Dada movement's irrational, luck-of-the-draw word connections... Held notes build slowly into chords and then drift on to new situations: first to big, shuddering climaxes, later to shrill aviary masses of wind sound, later still to pounding drums reminiscent of a half-time marching band. At the end, sweetly tonal chords emerge."
