New World Symphony Premieres Akira Nishimura's Concerto for Timpani and Five Percussionists

Mar. 01, 2020

Michael Linville leads the New World Symphony in the US Premiere of Akira Nishimura’s Concerto for Timpani and Five Percussionists on March 28. The Concerto for Timpani and Five Percussionists is composed of four parts.  The first part begins with a low drone in the timpani. The sensation of rays of light are created by metal percussion played in a high key.  In the second part, the timpani is enveloped by the sharp sounds of wooden percussion.  The high-pitched tremolos played by the xylophone call to mind the sound of Iwabue, a primitive stone whistle originated from ancient Shintoism.  Additionally, the sound of wooden plates invoke the style of ‘claps’ peculiar to Kabuki.  The third part is a short recurrence of the opening. Finally, the piece proceeds to a rhythmic concerto in the fourth part, with the timpani and metal percussion in harmony.  This piece is dedicated to the timpanist, Mr. Shigemitsu Eiso.
