US Premiere of Agata Zubel's <em>Not I</em> with Illinois Modern Ensemble

Composer and singer Agata Zubel joins the Illinois Modern Ensemble in the US premiere of her work Not I, for soprano, ensemble and electronics, on November 12. The performance, led by Stephen Taylor, takes place at the Krannert Center for the Performing Art’s Tryon Festival Theatre in Urbana, Illinois.

Commissioned by the Krakow Festival Office and based on Samuel Beckett’s dramatic monologue, Not I was premiered by Zubel and Klangforum Wien at the 2012 Sacrum Profanum Festival in Poland. The work was awarded the top prize at the 60th UNESCO International Rostrum of Composers as well as the inaugural Polonica Nova Award. In his original text, Beckett writes that the performance should take place in a dark room with the only light focused on the speaker’s lips. Zubel’s work follows this instruction with a film featuring the composer's mouth performing fragments of the text.

Following the US premiere, the Illinois Modern Ensemble takes the work on the road with additional performances on November 14 as part of the University of Louisville New Music Festival and on November 17 at Chicago’s “Constellation” space.
