UK Premiere of Gavin Bryars's Marilyn Forever
May. 01, 2019
Gavin Bryars's opera, Marilyn Forever debuts in the UK on May 24 with the Oxford Contemporary Opera Society. Not only does this performance mark the UK premiere of Bryars's chamber opera, but also the inaugural production of the Oxford Contemporary Opera Society itself. Directing the production will be the Opera Society's Founder, Zerlina Vulliamy.
The Aventa Ensemble, who commissioned this work, noted:
"Often seen as a victim, fantasy and sex object, the character of Monroe is fleshed out in this chamber opera: 'We are given through Monroe’s own voice her combination of sensitivity and exhibitionism, allied to the narrative of the ‘chorus’, a view from the ‘inside’ of the conflicting emotion and ambitions of this compelling and timeless personality."
