The Lucerne Festival Features Two Performances of Music by Dieter Ammann

Oct. 18, 2025

For the second time following its premiere, Dieter Ammann’s Viola Concerto was performed on August 30 by Tabea Zimmermann and the Lucerne Festival Contemporary Orchestra under David Robertson. Dieter Ammann summarizes the idea of the piece in the title “No templates” noting that it means, “an openness of thought in the approach to this genre”, but also “an openness in relation to the variety of means used and different textures”. The concerto is an intensive, dense composition that plays with the low voices of the instrumental ensemble. Notably, Nils Mönkemeyer and the Munich Chamber Orchestra, conducted by Bas Wiegers gave the German premiere of the work on October 16 in Munich, and Mönkemeyer will join EspritOrchestra, conducted by Alex Pauk at Koerner Hall in Toronto on March 26, 2026 for the Canadian premiere. In addition, General Manager Michael Haefliger, who has directed the Lucerne Festival for a quarter of a century, celebrated his last season with the Festival this year. His long tenure was marked by a fitting musical farewell on September 14. The program featured Dieter Ammann’s Violation for Violoncello and Orchestra with Sol Gabetta and the Lucerne Festival Contemporary Orchestra conducted by Riccardo Chailly.
