Tobias Picker's Opera Thérèse Raquin Premieres in Europe

Mar. 01, 2006

Following three internationally acclaimed productions in North America (The Dallas Opera, 2001 (world premiere), L'Opéra de Montréal, 2002, and San Diego Opera, 2003), Thérèse Raquin, Tobias Picker's third opera, sees its European premiere given by Opera Theatre Europe at the Linbury Studio of the Royal Opera House Covent Garden, London on March 14. For this production, Tobias Picker has reduced the instrumentation, creating a chamber opera version which can serve to accentuate the claustrophobic atmosphere of Emile Zola's novel and the ill-fated trajectory of the eponymous hero. Similarly to Emmeline (1996) and An American Tragedy (2005), Picker's Thérèse Raquin spins a tale of passion and desire colliding with societal norms and constraints as well as personal greed and hubris; an inescapable sea of dark and deadly consequences await.

Conducted by Timothy Redmond and directed by Lee Blakeley, Thérèse Raquin will be performed on March 14, 15, 17, and 18.
