Thomas Adès’s Violin Concerto – “Concentric Paths” receives performances with two American orchestras this month. Stefan Asbury leads the New World Symphony and violinist Anthony Marwood in a performance on March 26 at the New World Center in Miami Beach, Florida, and on March 31 Franz Welser-Möst leads The Cleveland Orchestra and violinist Leila Josefowicz at Severance Hall.

Adès’s concerto has three movements, like most, but the work is really more of a triptych, as the middle movement is the largest. The outer movements are circular in design, the first fast, with sheets of unstable harmony in different orbits, the third playful, at ease, with stable cycles moving in harmony at different rates. Marwood gave the work’s world premiere in 2005 with the Chamber Orchestra of Europe, led by the composer.

Also this month, Adès’s Three Studies from Couperin receives a performance at Boston’s Jordan Hall with the New England Conservatory Philharmonia. Jeffrey Kahane conducts the performance, which takes place on March 9.
