Thomas Adès’ Polaris Opens the New World Symphony’s New World Center in Miami
Jan. 11, 2011
Michael Tilson Thomas conducts the world premiere of Thomas Adès’ Polaris on January 26 at the grand opening of the New World Symphony’s new performing campus, designed by Frank Gehry. The home of the New World Symphony, the new campus will be inaugurated with Adès’ work accompanied by video art by Tal Rosner, along with works by Wagner and Copland. Polaris was commissioned by the New World Symphony, in partnership with the Los Angeles Philharmonic, the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra, the New York Philharmonic, the Gulbenkian Orchestra, The Barbican, London, and the San Francisco Symphony, all of which will present performances during the 2011 season.
The synergy between Adès’ music and the phenomena of Frank Gehry’s architecture has been represented through a variety of recitals and concerts at other Gehry designed venues. In 2007, Adès performed at Gehry’s Serpentine Gallery pavilion in London, and Adès has been featured many times at the Walt Disney Hall in Los Angeles, another iconic Gehry establishment, as composer, conductor and pianist.
Tal Rosner's new site defined work is based on the meetings of the sea and is visually inspired by Rockwell Kent's Moby Dick illustrations. The images combine directed scenes with live-action and graphic elements, fully utilizing the matrix of possibilities of the five-screen canvas.
