German Premiere of Rufus Wainwright's Prima Donna at Theater Augsburg

Theater Augsburg presents Rufus Wainwright’s internationally acclaimed first opera Prima Donna this month with eleven performances taking place in Augsburg from February 3 through June 14. Hans Peter Cloos's new production marks the German premiere of the opera, for which a German singing translation has been made. Prima Donna follows the story of an aging soprano in 1970s Paris as she attempts to return to operatic stardom.

Richard Morrison of The Times, London wrote following the opera's world premiere, “Prima Donna is a love song to opera, soaked in the perennial operatic themes of loss, betrayal, delusion and nostalgia, and saturated in the musical styles of opera’s golden age.”

Wainwirght's first opera had its world premiere at the Manchester International Festival in July 2009 followed soon after by its London debut at Sadler’s Wells in April 2010, and its North American debut in Toronto at the Luminato Festival in June 2010. The New York City Opera presented the New York premiere of Prima Donna at the Brooklyn Academy of Music in February 2012.
