The Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra Debuts A Celebration Overture by Nigel Hess

British composer Nigel Hess's new concert overture, A Celebration Overture, was given its premiere by the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra at the Royal Albert Hall on September 22, led by conductor Vasily Petrenko. The work is a brilliant and thrilling concert opener and was commissioned by the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra to mark its 175th anniversary. Hess writes of the work:

I was delighted when the RLPO asked me to create a piece to celebrate their 175th anniversary with, as they requested, "some good tunes". I hope A Celebration Overture does just that, with its party atmosphere and exuberant playing in all the orchestral departments.

Hess is best known for his holiday favorite A Christmas Overture, as well as for his film score Ladies in Lavender, which has been recorded in its arrangement for violin and orchestra by Joshua Bell and performed across the world by soloists such as Pinchas Zukerman and Nicola Benedetti.
