The New York Philharmonic Performs the US Premiere of György Ligeti's Mifiso la sodo
Oct. 18, 2023
David Robertson leads the New York Philharmonic in the US premiere of György Ligeti's Mifiso la sodo on October 19-21 at the Wu Tsai Theater at David Geffen Hall. The concert also features Ligeti's Concert Românesc (Romanian Concerto). Mifiso la sodo, composed in 1948, was premiered on June 22, 2023 by the Munich Chamber Orchestra, under the baton of Jörg Widmann.
This year, the international music world is celebrating the centenary of György Ligeti’s birth. This has provided an opportunity to focus on the previously lesser-known facets of the composer. Ligeti composed works during his youth and as a student which were never published during his lifetime but have now been made available in collaboration with the Paul Sacher Foundation. Little is known about the origins of Mifiso la sodo for chamber orchestra. Ligeti composed the work in 1948 while studying at the Franz Liszt Academy in Budapest and undertook revisions three years later. The title of the composition is a play on words – an early indication of Ligeti’s love of parody which is encountered on a regular basis in his later compositions.
