The Music of Matthias Pintscher in New York, Germany and Australia this Spring
Apr. 02, 2009
Baerenreiter composer Matthias Pintscher sees several performances of his works around the US and abroad this spring and summer. This month Klangforum Wien presents his work for solo trumpet Shining Forth, featuring trumpeter Anders Nyqvist, on April 6 at the Austrian Cultural Forum of New York. The Ensemble ACJW, led by Pintscher himself in his Carnegie Hall conducting debut, performs Choc (Monumento IV) on April 25 at Carnegie Hall's Zankel Hall. The Cleveland Plain Dealer's Donald Rosenberg writes of this work:
... an exploration of typically unusual sonorities and instrumental juxtapositions... What emerge throughout the piece are wisps and murmurings followed by galvanic eruptions of sound... fascinating tension and glistening tonal combinations.
Upcoming performances of the music of Matthias Pintscher around the globe this spring include: the Stuttgart Radio Symphony Orchestra performing Pourquoi l'azur muet, music from his opera L'espace dernier for soprano, mezzo-soprano and orchestra under conductor Krzysztof Urbanski on April 23; a three night stand beginning on May 2 in which Pintscher conducts the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra through his works Osiris, Reflectionson Narcissus, and Transir at the Melbourne Metropolis Festival, which is also curated by Pintscher; and the Berlin Philharmonic performing the world premiere of Celestial Object I, part onefrom "sonic eclipse" for solo trumpet and ensemble on May 20. Other upcoming performances include the UK premiere of Pintscher's quartet Study IV for Treatise on the Veil performed by Quatour Diotima presented as part of the Cheltenham Festival on July 15, co-commissioned by the Salzburg, Weimar and Cheltenham Festivals. In September 2009 Pintscher leads the Berlin Philharmonic through the world premiere of Celestial Object II part two from "sonic eclipse" at the Zermatt Festival in Switzerland. Pintscher's orchestral work Osiris just came off a successful European tour by The Philadelphia Orchestra and Christoph Eschenbach, and this November his piece Towards Osiris comes to New York for its US premiere at the hands of Vladimir Jurowski and the New York Philharmonic. Pintscher is currently at work on a song cycle for Thomas Hampson commissioned by the New York Philharmonic for their recently launched new music series "Contact", for performance on April 16 at New York City's Symphony Space.
