The Joffrey Ballet Performs Chicago Premiere of The Merry Widow Ballet

Feb. 01, 2011

February 16 sees the Chicago debut of the ballet adaptation of Franz Lehár’s The Merry Widow, choreographed by Ronald Hynd at the Joffrey Ballet. The performance features live accompaniment from the Chicago Sinfonietta for the duration of the run, which continues through February 27.

Emily Disher writes in Clef Notes:

A beautiful score, lavish costumes, light hearted comedy, and the refined athleticism of the Joffrey dancers combine in this evening-length performance. Joffrey Ballet Artistic Director Ashley Wheater promises, "Merry Widow is a huge production. It’s very beautiful. It’s very lush. It’s that delicious little moment where you can sit back on a cold winter’s day and be swept away."
