The American Symphony Orchestra Presents Paul Hindemith's <em>The Long Christmas Dinner</em>

On December 19, the American Symphony Orchestra presents a rare double-bill production of Thornton Wilder’s one-act play and Paul Hindemith’s one-act opera The Long Christmas Dinner. Leon Botstein conducts, with a cast featuring sopranos Camille Zamora and Kathryn Guthrie, mezzo-sopranos Sara Murphy and Catherine Martin, tenors Glenn Seven Allen and Scott Murphree, baritone Jarrett Ott and bass-baritone Josh Quinn. The production, which takes place at Lincoln Center’s Alice Tully Hall, features direction by Jonathan Rosenberg, scenic design by Zane Pihlstrom, costume design by Olivera Gajic and lighting design by Peter West.

Through a single fast-forward sequence, The Long Christmas Dinner presents ninety Christmas dinners spanning four generations of the Bayard family from 1840 to 1930. The dinners are condensed and presented in a continuous Christmas meal that provides the background to the progression of kaleidoscopic plot sequences and emotional states involving various members of the family.
