Talea Ensemble Presents the US Premiere of Julian Anderson's Van Gogh Blue at the Library of Congress

New York’s Talea Ensemble presents the US premiere of Julian Anderson’s Van Gogh Blue at the Library of Congress in Washington, DC on March 11. The Serge Koussevitzky Music Foundation in the Library of Congress commissioned the work, composed for eight instruments, which received its world premiere at Wigmore Hall in November of 2015 with the Nash Ensemble conducted by Alexandre Bloch.

The point of origin for Van Gogh Blue was the collected letters of Vincent van Gogh. These documents are filled with joyous exuberance for the practical considerations of his work, particularly what he will paint next and most importantly what colors he will use. Anderson translated these painterly considerations into sound, drawing on instrumental color throughout the octet, including two “mobile” clarinetists who move throughout the space.
