Akira Nishimura in Portrait with Suntory Foundation for the Arts

The Suntory Foundation for the Arts continues its renowned “Profile of A Composer” series, now in its 35th year, with a celebration of the composers Akira Nishimura and Ichiro Nodaïra. The event takes place on October 28 with Yoichi Sugiyama conducting the Tokyo Metopolitan Symphony Orchestra in the world premiere of Nishimura’s Concerto for Liquid Orchestra as well as a new piano concerto—Piano Concerto “Crossing A · I”—jointly written by Nishimura and Nodaïra, who is also featured as soloist for the premiere.

Piano Concerto “Crossing A · I” features a unique form due to its “joint composition”, hinted at by its title (the letters “A” and “I” standing for the composers’ first names). Each movement consists of a “crossing” of the two compositional voices: the first movement features a solo part composed by Nishimura and orchestrated by Nodaïra, the second movement consists of cadenza fragements by both composers to be performed randomly, and the third movement features a solo part by Nodaïra and orchestration by Nishimura.
