Summertime, and Finding Gershwin Concerts is Easy

Jul. 03, 2007

What’s an American summer without hot dogs, barbecue, apple pie, baseball, fireworks, insufferable heat and the music of George Gershwin? Well, it’s not a summer we would recommend, that’s for certain. While your local grocery can provide you with most of the other recommended provisions (probably not baseball, and, well, not fireworks either in many cases), check your local performing organizations to find out when you can find some Gershwin at the local band shell.

If you happen to be near Aspen, Colorado, you’re lucky: you are treated to a veritable smorgasbord of Gershwin performances—including performances conducted by David Robertson and David Zinman, with a special “Rhapsody in Blue” benefit featuring soprano Kathleen Battle. Fancy a trip to Niagara Falls? Be sure to stop by Buffalo as the Buffalo Philharmonic Orchestra performs a full program of Gershwin tunes July 8. The Cleveland Orchestra performs their “An American in Paris” program, featuring a number of Gershwin favorites on July 28 at the Blossom Festival (N.B. Arrive early for the free beer tasting). Speaking of tasting, this is only a very small sampling of the Gershwin performances around the country in July. Check with your local performing arts organizations for more concerts!
