Stephen Paulus's <em>Voices from the Gallery</em> with the West Michigan Symphony

On February 6, Scott Speck leads the West Michigan Symphony, along with narrator Carla Hill, in a performance of Stephen Paulus’s Voices from the Gallery. Paulus’s 30-minute work for narrator and orchestra features a libretto by playwright and filmmaker Joan Vail Thorne. Written in 1991, Voices from the Gallery was premiered by The Atlantic Sinfonietta in New York, conducted by Andrew Schenck and with narration by Janet Bookspan. The work was subsequently recorded on d’Note Records. 

Voices from the Gallery is a witty and sometimes serious commentary on various well-known works of art ranging from Greco-Roman antiquities to the Renaissance, Impressionism and Cubism. In contrast to Mussorgsky’s Pictures at an Exhibition, which famously depicts the actions and scenes within several paintings, Paulus and Thorne instead re-imagine the artists’ own inner dialogues of how they perceive those viewers who are looking at their work.
