Premiere Multimedia Performance of Joseph Schwantner's New Morning for the World

On April 4, the New Haven Symphony Orchestra, led by William Boughton, presented a unique performance of Joseph Schwantner's New Morning for the World ("Daybreak of Freedom"). Schwantner's beloved work for narrator and orchestra with texts selected from a variety of Martin Luther King’s speeches across his lifetime, was performed for the first time as a multimedia work featuring a new visual component by Elliott Forrest commissioned by the orchestra for this occasion. The New Haven Symphony Orchestra concert, entitled "To Thee We Sing", also featured Tobias Picker's orchestral masterpiece Old and Lost Rivers and marked the 80th Anniversary of Marian Anderson’s groundbreaking performance at the Lincoln Memorial with a program celebrating the perseverance of the human spirit. New Morning for the World was recorded by the Oregon Symphony in 1994 under James DePriest for the Koch International Classics label and has been perfomed countless times since its premiere in 1983 with the Eastman Philharmonia and narrator Willie Stargell.
