Sir Peter Maxwell Davies Celebrates 80

We send our warmest wishes to Sir Peter Maxwell Davies who celebrates his 80th birthday this month. An exquisite composer who has left an enduring mark on the world’s musical community, Davies was recently named Companion of Honour by Queen Elizabeth II after stepping down from his post as Master of the Queen’s Music. His recent Symphony No. 10, which premiered with the London Symphony Orchestra in February, was hailed by The Guardian as “a major new symphony.”

Many concerts have been planned throughout the year in honor of the occasion, most notably a birthday concert on September 8 at the 2014 BBC Proms, a performance of Davies’s recent work for chamber orchestra, Last Door of Light, by the Scottish Chamber Orchestra on September 14, led by Ben Gernon, as well as a portrait concert on October 15 with HK Gruber leading the BBC Philharmonic Orchestra in a program that includes The Fall of the Leafe and Overture: St. Francis of Assisi. Later this season, Davies receives the world premiere of a new string quintet with the Nash Ensemble. The premiere takes place on March 18 at London’s Wigmore Hall.
