Schott New York Season Preview

From new works to residencies, this season features many exciting events from our Schott New York Composers. Upcoming events include 75th birthday celebrations for Alvin Singleton, a new harp concerto by Hannah Lash (with the composer as soloist), a new piano concerto by Andrew Norman for the New York Philharmonic, a major new orchestral work by Tobias Picker for the National Symphony Orchestra, and a concerto for English horn and orchestra by Bernard Rands for The Cleveland Orchestra. Read on for a preview of what's to come:

Robert Beaser

This season brings the release of a new recording on Linn Records by the Royal Scottish National Orchestra, led by José Serebrier, featuring three major orchestral works by Robert Beaser: Evening PrayerGround O and the Guitar Concerto featuring soloist Eliot Fisk.

Kamran Ince
University of Memphis has commissioned a new work for concert band from Kamran Ince, which receives its premiere in Memphis in September 2016, to be followed by performances by a large consortium of U.S. concert bands throughout the 16/17 season. 

Vijay Iyer
Matt Haimovitz debuts Run, a new work for solo cello by Vijay Iyer at Columbia’s Miller Theatre on October 22 as part of his "Bach Overtures Project" which includes performance of the complete Bach cello suites, each preceded by a new short overture commissioned by Haimovitz. Vijay Iyer also serves as Artist in Residence at the Metropolitan Museum of Art this season, which will feature many programs curated by the composer, including his own Veterans’ Dreams Project.

Pierre Jalbert
Pierre Jalbert receives the world premiere of a new work for string orchestra in the spring of 2016 commissioned by the Philadelphia Chamber Music Society.

Hannah Lash
Hannah Lash receives the world premiere of several works this season, including her Concerto for Harp and Chamber Orchestra (October 23) with George Manahan leading the American Composers Orchestra and Lash as soloist, two movements from The Voynich Symphony (October 1 and May 19) as part of her residency with the New Haven Symphony, Two Movements for violin and piano (November 13) premiered by Ensemble Intercontemporain at the Library of Congress, a Requiem for the Yale Choral Artists (February 26), and a new chamber opera Beowulf (May 20) for Guerilla Opera. A Composer Portrait Concert at Columbia’s Miller Theatre takes place on April 7.

Fred Lerdahl
This season sees the premieres of several new works by Fred Lerdahl, including a new string quartet, Chaconne, in honor of the Daedalus Quartet’s 15th anniversary, a cello/piano duo for cellist Anssi Karttunen and pianist Nicolas Hodges, as well as a work for the two-piano ensemble Quattro Mani.

Lei Liang
On March 29, the Formosa Quartet premieres a new string quartet by Lei Liang. The Boston Modern Orchestra Project also premieres a new large-scale orchestral work, and a new recording will be released featuring Liang’s Five Seasons concerto for pipa and string orchestra and his chamber opera Cuatro Corridos: “Rose”

Andrew Norman
On November 6, the Utah Symphony premieres Norman’s Switch for percussion and orchestra, with soloist Colin Currie and conducted by Thierry Fischer. On December 10, James Gaffigan leads the New York Philharmonic in the premiere of a new work for piano and orchestra with soloist Jeffrey Kahane. Additional premieres this season include short works for violin and piano for violinist Jennifer Koh and pianist Shai Wosner, as well as the first movement of a new large-scale orchestral work for the Los Angeles Philharmonic.

Tobias Picker 
Christophe Eschenbach leads the National Symphony Orchestra in the world premiere of Opera Without Words on March 10. The Nashville Symphony, a co-commissioner with the National Symphonhy Orchestra of Picker's new orchestra work, performs the work in 2017 under the direction of Giancarlo Guerrero.

Bernard Rands
The world premiere of Bernard Rands’s Concerto for English Horn and Orchestra takes place November 27 with Lionel Bringuier leading The Cleveland Orchestra with soloist Robert Walters. Indiana University hosts Bernard Rands for a residency from October 18-23, which includes a performance of Rands’s recent Folksongs for singer and chamber ensemble.

Joseph Schwantner
This season Joseph Schwantner holds residencies at the universities of South Carolina (September 20-21), Kennesaw State (February 15-17), Louisiana State (February 22-24), Wisconsin-Milwaukee (March 3-5), and Texas at Austin (April 27-May 1). This season also sees the release of two new albums, together comprising Schwantner’s complete works for flute: one by flutist Sarah Frisof on Centaur Records, and another by flutist Jennie Oh Brown on Innova Recordings.

Alvin Singleton
Alvin Singleton celebrates his 75th birthday this season (December 28) with a portrait concert at Roulette in New York on March 10, 2016 featuring music for strings and piano, as well as the world premiere of a new work for chorus and ensemble as part of the Cincinnati May Festival, conducted by James Conlon. Additional performances include Different River by the Atlanta Symphony on April 7, conducted by Robert Spano, and Where the Good Sounds Live by the Drexel University Concert Band where Singleton will be in residence December 2-6.

Gregory Spears
Two operas by Gregory Spears receive their world premieres this season: O Columbia on September 23 presented by Houston Grand Opera’s HGOco, and Fellow Travelers on June 17, presented by Cincinnati Opera.
