Schott | EAM 2021-2022 Season Preview

The new season is replete with a return to in-person performances including thrilling world premieres and innovative productions of works in our catalogue both new and old. Composer Hannah Lash, pictured left, is just one of many of our composers with noteworthy premieres on their calendars. Read on for a sampling of this season's highlights. 

Thomas Adès
In a series of six events between October 15 and 29, the Finnish Radio Symphony Orchestra will run FRSO Festival Thomas Adès celebrating the composer and his work. The festival includes a new work for violin and orchestra, premiered by Pekka Kuusisto.

Julian Anderson
The Munich Philharmonic, led by Semyon Bychkov, performs the world premiere performances of Julian Anderson's Symphony No. 2 on January 19 and 20.

Katherine Balch
The California Symphony (Donato Cabrera, conductor) performs the world premiere performances of Katherine Balch's Illuminate for two sopranos, mezzo-soprano, and orchestra on March 26 and 27. Gemma New conducts the Liverpool Philharmonic in the UK premiere of Like a broken clock on June 30 at Liverpool Philharmonic Hall.

Gerald Barry
Opernstudio NRW perform the German premiere of Gerald Barry's The Importance of Being Earnest on May 26 (followed by three additional performances). The performance is presented by Musiktheater im Revier. Robin Phillips conducts and Hanna Kneißler directs.

Christopher Cerrone
Pittsburgh Opera presents the world premiere of Christopher Cerrone's In a Grove on February 19 with additional performances on February 22, 25, 27 and March 1 & 3. The libretto is by Stephanie Fleischmann, based on the short story by Ryūnosuke Akutagawa. The production is directed by Mary Birnbaum and conducted by Antony Walker.

Francisco Coll
The Toronto Symphony Orchestra, led by Gustavo Gimeno, premieres Francisco Coll's Elysian on June 9 with an additional performance on June 11. 

Tom Coult
The world premiere of Tom Coult's violin concerto Pleasure Garden on November 6 marks start of his time as Composer-in-Association with the BBC Philharmonic. Tom Coult's chamber opera Violet premieres at the Aldeburgh Festival on June 22.

Jessica Curry
Crouch End Festival Chorus premieres Jessica Curry's Echo for chorus and orchestra at Alexandra Palace Theatre in London on October 24.

Chaya Czernowin
The Jack Quartet and SWR Vokalensemble Stuttgart, directed by Yuval Weinberg, premiere Chaya Czernowin's Unhistorical Acts onOctober 14-15 at the Donaueschinger Musiktage Festival in Donaueschingen, Germany. The Crossing, led by Donald Nally will join the JACK Quartet to perform the US premiere in Philadelphia on June 25. Chaya Czernowin is composer-in-residence at the Huddersfield Contemporary Music Festival in the UK this November, during which time, three of her large-scale pieces will be performed. The Fabrication of Light for large ensemble will be performed on November 19 by Ensemble Musikfabrik, led by Enno Poppe. Fast Darkness I : I can see your turned eyes from inside your body, is performed by Aaron Holloway-Nahum, Gareth Davies, and the Riot Ensemble on November 20. Finally, HIDDEN is performed by the Arditti Quartet on November 21.

Anthony Davis
The New York Philharmonic, led by Dalia Stasevska, performs Anthony Davis's You Have the Right to Remain Silent featuring Anthony McGill as the soloist on October 20-22.

Danny Elfman
Colin Currie and The London Philharmonic, led by Ludwig Wicki, perform the world premiere of Danny Elfman's Percussion Concerto in London on March 25

Alexander Goehr
The Nash Ensemble performs the world premiere of Alexander Goehr's Combat of Joseph della Reina and the Devil at London's Wigmore Hall on March 22.

Howard Goodall
Andrew Litton conducts the English Chamber Orchestra in the world premiere of Howard Goodall's Postman's Park on June 16 at Cadogan Hall in London.

Anders Hillborg
Lawrence Power and the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic, under the baton of Andrew Manze, premiere Anders Hillborg's Viola Concerto on October 21.

Matthew Hindson
The Sarasota Ballet premieres Matthew Hindson's A Comedy of Errors, a full-length ballet choreographed by David Bintley CBE, on March 25-26.

Vijay Iyer
On May 10, pianist Sarah Rothenberg performs a new work for solo piano on the DACAMERA series in Houston, Texas.

Pierre Jalbert
Led by David Felberg, Chatter performs the world premiere of Pierre Jalbert's All is Now for 10 players at SITE Santa Fe on October 9 and Las Puertas in Albuquerque on October 10.

Leoš Janáček
The Royal Opera continues its series of Janáček operas with the first production of Jenůfa at Covent Garden since 2001, directed by Claus Guth. The opera will run in live performances from September 28-October 12, and can be streamed on Royal Opera's websie from October 15.

Thomas Larcher
Kirill Gerstein and the Danish Radio Symphony Orchestra, led by Alondra de la Parra, perform Larcher's Piano Concerto on November 18. Gerstein performs the work with the Bergen Philharmonic Orchestra, under the baton of Edward Gardner, on November 22 and with the Berlin Philharmonic, led by Semyon Bychkov, on December 2-4.

Hannah Lash
Filigree in Textile is performed on the Santa Fe Symphony's "Strata" Chamber Series on November 10. On November 18, The Seattle Symphony, under the baton of Thomas Dausgaard, performs the world premiere of Lash's double harp concerto, The Peril of Dreams, featuring Seattle Symphony principal harpist Valerie Muzzolini Gordon as well as the composer herself. An additional performance follows on November 20.

Lei Liang
The NewMusic Camerata at East Carolina University will premiere Lei Liang's Close your eyes for SA voices on October 23.

Tobias Picker
Theater an der Wien presents the Austrian premiere of Tobias Picker's Thérèse Raquin on December 6 with additional performances through January 20. Christian Thausing directs and Jonathan Palmer Lakeland conducts this new production. Pensacola Symphony Orchestra, led by Peter Rubardt, perform Old and Lost Rivers on January 15. The University of Alabama presents Thérèse Raquin directed by Paul Houghtaling and conducted by Jamie Reeves on March 3, 4, and 6. The world premiere of Tobias Picker's opera, Awakenings, based on the book by Oliver Sacks with a libretto by Aryeh Lev Stollman, is presented by Opera Theatre of Saint Louis on June 5 with additional perfomances on June 9, 11, 18, and 24.

Matthias Pintscher
Matthias Pintscher conducts the Cincinnati Symphony in a performance of Nur on October 1 at Music Hall.

Bernard Rands
The New England Philharmonic, led by Adam Kerry Boyles, performs Bernard Rands's DREAM on December 5. The SPEKTRAL Quartet will give the world premiere of Bernard Rands's String Quartet Music on March 2 (the composer's birthday) in Chicago and perform the work again on April 2 in Madson, WI. The Boston Symphony Orchestra, under the baton of Alan Gilbert, gives the world premiere of Symphonic Fantasy on April 14 with additional performances on April 15 and 16. On May 22, the Chicago Youth Symphony Orchesta, led by Allen Tinkham, premieres Rands's AURA at Symphony Center in Chicago. The orchestra will perform the work on tour in Berlin, Leipzig, Prague, and Vienna. 

Torsten Rasch
Torsten Rasch’s latest opera Die andere Frau premieres at the Semperoper Dresden on January 22 with additional performances on January 30, February 2, and February 9.

Joaquín Rodrigo
In addition to numerous performances of Joaquín Rodrigo's beloved Concierto de Aranjuez around the world, Pablo Sáinz-Villegas will perform Invocación y Danza as part of a solo recital at the Elbphilharmonie Hamburg on November 22-23. James Gaffigan leads the Orquesta de la Comunitat Valenciana in performances of A la busca del mas allá at the Palau de les Arts Reina Sofía in Valencia on May 6-7.

Nino Rota
The Orchestre de Paris, led by Frank Strobel, plays some of Nino Rota's most beloved works from November 19-28 as part of a "Nino Rota Weekend". 

Arnold Schönberg
Schönberg's ‘drama with music’ Die glückliche Hand (The Hand of Fate) will be performed for the first time in a transcription for baritone and chamber ensemble by Eberhard Kloke on September 18 at the Würzburger Theaterfabrik. Egon Wellesz once described the composition as an exemplary work of musical expressionism. 

Joseph Schwantner
On October 15-16, the world premiere performances of Joseph Schwantner's Violin Concerto are performed by the Detroit Symphony Orchestra under the baton of Leonard Slatkin, featuring Yevgeny Kutik as the soloist. Schwantner's Fast Forward, a chamber concerto for solo percussion, percussion quartet, piano and contrabass, is premiered at the Eastman School of Music as part of their Centennial Celebration on March 24 at Eastman's Kilbourn Hall.

Martin Suckling
Pianist Tamara Stefanovich premieres a new etude by Martin Suckling on January 22 at the Trier–Philharmonie Luxembourg.

Stewart Wallace
Opera Theatre of Saint Louis presents the world premiere of Stewart Wallace's Harvey Milk Reimagined on June 11 with additional performances on 15, 17, 19, 23, and 25. Seán Curran directs the new production and Carolyn Kuan conducts. 

Huw Watkins
In the Locked Room, a one-act chamber opera by Huw Watkins, is performed in concert at Wigmore Hall, where the composer is in residency on November 3. The Calidore Quartet give the world premiere performance of Huw Watkins's String Quartet No. 2 at Wigmore Hall on May 16, and the BBC National Orchestra of Wales perform Watkins's Symphony No. 2 on May 11.

Kurt Weill
A new production of Die Dreigroschenoper, directed by Torsten Fischer and conducted by Christian Frank, opened at Kammerspiele der Josefstadt in Vienna on September 5 with performances continuing through May, 2022. With Kurt Weill's Der Silbersee published this year in a new critical edition, the Flemish Opera opens their new season in Ghent with four performances of the work beginning on September 18. Five  performances follow in Antwerp. Aufstieg und Fall der Stadt Mahagonny, directed by Barrie Kosky and conducted by Ainārs Rubiķis, opens on October 2 at the Komische Oper Berlin.

Ryan Wigglesworth
Ryan Wigglesworth leads the Halle Orchestra in the UK premiere of his Piano Concerto, featuring Marc-André Hamelin as the soloist on November 4 at The Bridgewater Hall in Manchester.
