Sandbox Percussion Premieres Douglas J. Cuomo's The Jump Up! at Caramoor
Jul. 21, 2024
On July 21, Sandbox Percussion premiered Douglas J. Cuomo's The Jump Up! at The Sunken Garden at the Caramoor Center for Music and The Arts, in Katonah, NY. The work was composed for Sandbox Percussion and a number of volunteer percussionists from the local community. The composer notes that the work, "is all about the joy and celebration of communal music making and listening." He continues, "Sandbox, the director Mark DeChiazza, and I have really enjoyed creating this piece, and we want to give a big thanks to Caramoor for presenting it and offering it as a free event." This work marks another collaboration for Cuomo and Sandbox Percussion. The ensemble premiered Proverb for percussion quartet at Tippet Rise Art Center in Montana last season.
During the performance, the musicians roamed through Caramoor’s beautiful Sunken Garden, with the audience encouraged to freely move about the players, each listener navigating their own interaction with the music.

Cuomo highlights the unifying elements of his new work, “Making music together, and particularly drumming, creates such deep and powerful connections for everyone involved. The whole point of this piece is to have as many people as possible experience that connection, by bringing together Sandbox, the volunteer players, and the audience, so that some joyful magic can happen.”
