Saint Paul Chamber Orchestra Performs George Perle's <em>Sinfonietta No. 1</em>

2015 marks the 100th anniversary of the birth of George Perle—a composer celebrated both for his prolific output as well as his influential writings on 20th-century music. Perle secured his position in the late 20th-century canon with a sophisticated and idiomatic synthesis of 12-tone music and traditional tonality.

On January 26, Perle’s Serenade No. 3, for piano and chamber ensemble, receives a performance at Wayne State University in Detroit, Michigan. Douglas Bianchi leads the performance, with pianist Robert Conway as soloist.

On January 29, Jaime Martín leads the Saint Paul Chamber Orchestra in a performance of Perle’s Sinfonietta No. 1. The performance takes place at Shepherd of the Valley Lutheran Church, with additional performances on January 30 and 31. Following a 1989 performance of the work, Bernard Holland wrote for the New York Times:

On paper, George Perle’s new Sinfonietta has the look of the 18th century. There is the same uncomplicated instrumentation, the clarity of texture and the appearance, as well, of lightfooted Rococo elegance…Mr. Perle has worked hard to shed the reputation of being a Berg scholar first and a composer second, but there is such affection in these yearning, ambiguous allusions to Viennese post-Romanticism, I don't think he would mind the connection being made…Perle’s music is by him and of his world, but it traces its ancestry with clarity.
