Rufus Wainwright’s Kurt Weill Tribute Album Released
Dec. 18, 2025
In November, three-time Grammy Award nominated singer-songwriter Rufus Wainwright and The Pacific Jazz Orchestra brought out I’m a Stranger Here Myself – Wainwright Does Weill. Released by Rock and Roll Credit Card, the recording is available in a variety of formats, including standard vinyl, CD, and streaming/digital download.
Wainwright’s lifelong connection to Kurt Weill’s music entered a new phase in May 2023. The kaleidoscopically talented vocalist, songwriter, and opera composer headlined five evenings at New York City’s Café Carlyle devoted to exploration of Weill’s rich songbook. These appearances led to a subsequent collaboration on the other coast. In partnership with conductor/arranger Chris Walden and The Pacific Jazz Orchestra, a top-flight forty-piece jazz ensemble based in Los Angeles, Wainwright performed newly orchestrated versions of fourteen songs. The variety of the set list is notable, featuring songs from throughout Weill’s career, from “Mack the Knife” to “Je ne t’aime pas” to “Lost in the Stars.” The recording features guest appearances by Viola Odette Harlow and The Netherlands’ famed Metropole Orkest. Says a review on marlbank.net: “Wainwright throws himself into Weill’s world completely persuasively. The orchestral accompaniment isn’t over the top – it’s a throwback but doesn’t indulge in jazz age sentimentality at all.”
