Rufus Wainwright's Prima Donna Makes its London Debut
Apr. 02, 2010
Following its sold out world premiere run at the Manchester International Festival in 2009, Rufus Wainwright's opera-about-opera Prima Donna begins a series of performances at Sadler's Wells in London on April 12th, marking the work's London premiere. Wainwright's first opera, Prima Donna is a French-language work that follows an aging soprano in 1970s Paris as she attempts to return to operatic stardom. Richard Morrison of The Times, London writes:
[Prima Donna is] a love song to opera, soaked in the perennial operatic themes of loss, betrayal, delusion and nostalgia, and saturated in the musical styles of opera’s golden age.
Scottish soprano Janis Kelly returns in the title role of Régine Saint Laurent and British director Tim Albery presents a new production of the work for the London performances. Acclaimed singers Colin Ainsworth, Rebecca Bottone and Jonathan Summers round out the cast.
The London run of Prima Donna continues on April 14th, 16th and 17th and is conducted by Robert Houssart. Wainwright himself performs a solo show at Sadler's Wells on April 13th.
