Rodion Shchedrin's Beethoven's Heiligenstädter Testament Sees World Premiere by Bavarian Radio Symphony Orchestra

Dec. 02, 2008

The Bavarian Radio Symphony Orchestra, led by Mariss Jansons, perform the world premiere of Rodion Shchedrin's Beethoven's Heiligenstädter Testament in the Munich Philharmonie on December 18 and 19. For this work, Shchedrin used as his starting point Beethoven's infamous letter to his brothers Carl and Johann from 1802 in which he laments over the effects of his advancing deafness and declares himself able only to survive in the name of his art form. Shchedrin's concerto is part of a series of works on Beethoven commissioned by the Bavarian Radio Symphony Orchestra which began with the world premiere of Jörg Widmann's Con Brio in September 2008. Maestro Jansons and the Bavarian Radio Symphony Orchestra perform the US premiere of the work at Carnegie Hall on March 15.
