Ringing in the New Year with Kurt Weill

The music of Kurt Weill has been ringing in the New Year on concert stages from Kentucky to Geneva. For its New Year’s Eve festivities, the Lexington Philharmonic in Kentucky presented a “Moulin Rouge inspired evening” featuring Ute Lemper performing music by Weill, Gershwin, Edith Piaff and more. The lush Symphonic Nocturne from Lady in the Dark was highlighted in the program conducted by Music Director Scott Terrell.

On New Year’s Day, Oper Stuttgart journeyed from Berlin to Broadway with an all-Weill program spanning his career, including selections from The Threepenny Opera and Four Walt Whitman Songs. Principal Conductor Simon Hewitt led the Staatsorchester Stuttgart with ensemble members of the Schauspielhaus Stuttgart. Shauspiel Stuttgart sold out its New Year’s Eve performances of The Threepenny Opera, which opened in June and runs through January 22.

In Geneva, Finnish conductor Osmo Vänskä returns to the Orchestre de la Suisse Romande on January 13 for the Friends of the OSR New Year’s Concert, which will feature Grammy Award-winning soprano Dawn Upshaw singing selections by Weill, Duke, Bernstein, Gershwin, and Sondheim.
