Richard Rodney Bennett’s The Mines of Sulphur Selected by Le Monde As One of Best Classical Recordings of 2005
Jan. 01, 2006
After years of slumber, Richard Rodney Bennett’s The Mines of Sulphurawakened on the stage of Glimmerglass Opera during the 2004 festival season—and it was a hit! In 2005, the recording of the Glimmerglass production was released by Chandos…and it was a hit. Rounding out two years of delayed gratification (including an October–November run at New York City Opera, which was…a hit), The Mines of Sulphur has now been selected as a best classical recording of the year by the French newspaper Le Monde. Reminiscent of suspense thrillers from Poe to Hitchcock, Bennett’s opera, with a libretto by Beverley Cross, is set in a haunted manor where a macabre tale of greed and retribution hypnotically unfolds. What’s next for this masterpiece of 20th century opera? Stay tuned as there is likely to be a lot more action for The Mines in coming seasons.
Bennett, a prolific composer of all manner of works from solo and chamber to choral and orchestral, is also a gifted jazz pianist performing regularly on the New York and London cabaret scene, most recently with Patricia Racette.
