Richard Ayres's No. 48 (night studio) in World Premiere with the BBC Symphony Orchestra

Richard Ayres’s new orchestral work, No. 48 (night studio), receives its world premiere on October 8 with the BBC Symphony Orchestra, conducted by Ilan Volkov, at London’s Barbican Hall. Following the performance, Peter Eötvös leads the SWR Sinfonieorchester in the work’s German premiere on October 16 as part of the Donaueschingen Festival.

No. 48 (night studio), commissioned by the BBC Radio 3 and the Südwestrundfunk, is dedicated to American artist Philip Guston. The work is the third piece of an orchestral set by Ayres that pays tribute to artists and writers who are significant to the composer. Ayres’ elaborates:

Philip Guston’s break with the ultra-refined paintings of his circle of associates and his adoption of an almost cartoon-like expression in some way gave me creative permission. After this I felt I was allowed to explore a very wide field of music, and also rediscover and value my own musical background. His work profoundly challenged my views on art, creativity and its place in culture.

Details on the performances can be found at bbc.co.uk and swr.de.
