Richard Ayres's No. 59: Dr Frompou’s Anatomical Study of an Orchestra Premiered by the Aurora Orchestra

Apr. 25, 2025

In "Carnival," an exciting new orchestral theater production featuring Saint-Saëns's The Carnival of the Animals, Aurora Orchestra musicians are pushed to their limits by collaborators, Frantic Assembly.

From the virtuosic flight of the flute to the demon speed of the pianists, from the floor-shaking footsteps of the double bass to the soft glides of the cello, the dazzling carnival parade is infused with movement, design, lighting and new text by Kate Wakeling.

A highlight of this production are the world premiere performances of Richard Ayres’s new work, Dr Frompou’s Anatomical Study of an Orchestra which tells the story of what happens after the carnival is over and the musicians begin to rebel!

The performance features actor/dancer, Christopher Akrill actor/dancer, actor Naomi Frederick, and the Aurora Orchestra, conducted by Nicholas Collon, and is co-directed by Jane Mitchell and Scott Graham with lighting design by Simisola Majekodunmi, production design by Jon Bausor, and script by Kate Wakeling.

"Carnival" runs from May 3-23, with performances at the Southbank Center, Snape Maltings, and Bury St. Edmunds.
