PWM'S ANAKLASIS Releases the Premiere Recording of Joanna Wnuk-Nazarowa’s Wanda
Apr. 03, 2023
On March 31, ANAKLASIS released the premiere video recording of Joanna Wnuk-Nazarowa’s opera, Wanda, a "musical version of the tale of Cracow’s legendary ruler, taken from Cyprian Kamil Norwid’s ‘mystery play’ and translated into the language of contemporary opera..." The blu-ray disc contains a recording of the opera’s production featuring Agata Schmidt, Tomasz Konieczny, Andrzej Lampert, and Paula Maciołek, as well as a documentary film about the composer titled Under the Pressure of Sound and the Word, directed by Violetta Rotter-Kozera.
Wanda highlights a fundemental and compelling conflict, specifically, what to do when one has to make a choice that will affect one's own personal happiness at the expense of the common good. ANAKLASSIS notes: "Wanda is Wnuk-Nazarowa’s first opera and the world’s second (after Antonín Dvořák’s Vanda) completed and staged work dedicated to this legendary Polish monarch. it is also an adaptation, unique on the global scale, of Norwid’s text for the musical language of the opera."
