Premieres from Wolfgang Rihm, Georg Friedrich Haas and Andrew Norman at the Winnipeg New Music Festival
Jan. 06, 2015

On January 31, The Winnipeg Symphony Orchestra opens its annual New Music Festival with the Canadian premieres of Wolfgang Rihm’s Concerto "Dithyrambe" and Andrew Norman’s Unstuck, as well as the North American premiere of Georg Friedrich Haas’s Traum in des Sommers Nacht. The program features the Arditti Quartet as soloists in Rihm’s Concerto, with Alexander Mickelthwate leading the orchestra.
Rihm describes his Concerto, which premiered in 2000 with Riccardo Chailly leading the Arditti Quartet and the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra, as “fast, dense music”, in which the string quartet represents a “creature with…four heads and four mouths,” surrounded by the orchestra as if by a “cage or a chamber with open windows.”
Haas’s Traum in des Sommers Nacht was composed in homage to Mendelssohn, and takes the composer’s beloved Ein Sommernachtstraum, Op. 61 as a foundation for Haas’s own approach to sound, form and color. Chailly conducted the work’s premiere in 2009 with the Gewandhaus Orchestra in Leipzig.
Having received its first performance in 2008 with the Tonhalle-Orchester Zürich, Norman’s Unstuck has quickly become an audience favorite. The work explores the ebb and flow of the writing process, from blocks to breakthroughs.
The concert takes place at the Centennial Concert Hall in Winnipeg, Manitoba, with a pre-concert panel discussion from Norman and Haas at Brandon University.
