Praise for Johannes Maria Staud's On Comparative Meteorology at Cleveland
Jun. 04, 2009
The Cleveland Orchestra closed its season with the world premiere of Johannes Maria Staud's On Comparative Meteorology last week and the work has already garnered enthusiastic reviews. Zachary Lewis of the Cleveland Plain Dealer writes:
If Staud's goal is to dissolve time, consider it achieved. Icy stillness predominates as mysterious effects slowly crystallize: bent pitches on the harp, faint warbling by the bass flute, a softly rattling wind chime... sit back, and for the last time this season, yield to the music.
The Cleveland Orchestra's performance of On Comparative Meteorology was followed by Mahler's Symphony No. 5, and later this month the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra, led by Manfred Honeck, follows suit as they close their season with Mahler's Symphony No. 2, featuring the Mendelssohn Choir of Pittsburgh, Betsy Burleigh, director. Mahler's great Symphony No. 2 is available from Universal Edition in newly edited performance material and full score by Renate Stark-Voit and Gilbert Kaplan. Released in the winter of 2004/05, the new edition is part of the International Gustav Mahler Society's Complete Critical Edition series.
