Portuguese Premieres of Cerha's <em>Impulse</em> and Haas's <em>concerto grosso Nr. 1</em>

The Orquestra Sinfonica do Porto Casa da Musica presents two Portuguese premieres this month. Led by conductor Leopold Hager, the orchestra performed Fredrich Cerha’s Impulse on June 2 at the Sala Suggia. They perform Georg Fredrich Haas’s concerto grosso Nr. 1 for four alphorns and orchestra on June 30 under the baton of conductor Stefan Blunier.

Cerha notes that Impulse is subdivided into four sections and is texturally intricate. He describes the work:

“Formally, this piece is multifaceted, rich and emotionally imbued with strong contrasts. Constructs of a fierce and passionate nature alternate with expressions of quietude, often pensively elegiac, and at times harshly and suddenly juxtaposed.”

Georg Friedrich Haas draws from his childhood experience of living along the Swiss border in the mountainous province of Vorarlberg. On his choice of the alphorn for his concerto grosso Nr. 1 he explains:

“Alphorns are not seen as symbols of folklorist culture, but rather as the source of another dimension of intonation (overtone chords), used to create contrast and to expand the traditional twelve-tone tuning of the symphony orchestra.”
