Pēteris Vasks's <em>Lonely Angel</em> in US Premiere with Karina Canellakis and the Toledo Symphony

On October 24, the Toledo Symphony presents the US premiere of Latvian composer Pēteris Vasks’s Vientuļais eņģelis (Lonely Angel), featuring Karina Canellakis as both conductor and soloist. Originally written in 1996 and subtitled “Meditation for Violin and String Orchestra,” Vasks’s concerto premiered in 2006 in Riva, Latvia, featuring violinist Gidon Kremer as soloist and conductor with the Kremerata Baltica. The Toledo Symphony performance takes place at the Winebrenner Seminary on October 24 in Findlay, OH.

The contemplative nature of Lonely Angel carries the listener away to another realm with its wide-ranging melodic writing. Vasks shares his image for the piece:

I saw an angel, flying over the world; the angel looks at the world’s condition with grieving eyes, but an almost imperceptible, loving touch of the angel’s wings brings comfort and healing. This piece is my music after the pain.

A subsequent performance of Lonely Angel takes place in Germany on November 23, as conductor Andreas Gräsle leads concertmistress Christiane Schumacher and the Concerto Ditzingen.
