Paweł Mykietyn's Counting Rhyme Debuts at the Katowice Kultura Natura Festival

Paweł Mykietyn's Counting Rhyme Debuts at the Katowice Kultura Natura Festival

On May 20, Polish composer Paweł Mykietyn receives the world premiere of a major new work for three female voices and ensemble, Counting Rhyme, as part of the Katowice Kultura Natura Festival in Katowice, Poland. Szymon Bywalec leads the New Music Orchestra in the premiere, featuring vocalists Anna Gadt, Agnieszka Kiepuszewska and Iwona Kmiecik.

In Counting Rhyme, Mykietyn continues his exploration of the “permanent accelerando” concept which he has developed in recent pieces; the first movement of this new work is based on an algorithm that results in a steady acceleration of the tempo. “Through this,” Mykietyn writes, “various kinds of “musical themes”—from quasi-rock grooves to a quasi-Baroque fugue—are processed.” The voices are not treated in a typical soloistic manner, but rather represent an expansion of the instrumental ensemble.

Mykietyn’s recent opera, The Magic Mountain, based on the novel by Thomas Mann, premiered at the Malta Festival in 2015. Watch an excerpt, below:
