On November 22, Sáinz-Villegas will perform Joaquín Rodrigo's Invocación y danza at the Elbphilharmonie as part of a recital of music by Spanish composers. The Britten Sinfonia, led by Scott Stroman and featuring trumpeter Alison Balsom, perform Sketches of Spain, a jazz version of the Adagio from the Concierto de Aranjuez by Gil Evans and Miles Davis on November 14 and 18 at Theatre Royal in Norwich and Milton Court in London, respectively.

On November 21, Pascual Osa leads the Orquesta Filarmonía de Madrid and narrator Herbert Lampka in a performance of El niño que soñó la música (The Boy Who Imagined Music) at the Auditorio Centro Cultural Eduardo Úrculo in Madrid.

Joaquín Rodrigo, el niño que soñó la música tells the gripping story of a young blind boy who dreamed of being a musician and went on to become a great composer. Joaquín Rodrigo's life was as exciting as a novel and his journey through life is an example of overcoming hardships. This work narrates in the first person the story of a child who rose above his physical handicap of blindness to triumph in life and become one of Spain’s most universal composers. The narration is accompanied by numerous fragments of Joaquín Rodrigo’s pieces. The text is available in Spanish and English to suit the needs of the audience.

El niño que soñó la música is a beautiful and immediately accessible work for audiences of all ages, celebrating the artistic spirit and the triumph of the human spirit over daunting challenges.

“Music fulfills an important educational function because, above all, it cultivates the spirit.”

“I have observed that people who are moved by music are more sensitive to all manifestations of life”

--Joaquin Rodrigo

Finally, as we look ahead to this holiday season and beyond, we encourage orchestras and music directors to explore Joaquín Rodrigo's stunning Christmas oratorio, Retablo de Navidad. The work, filled with charming melodies and rousing choruses, awaits a United States premiere.
