Oliver Knussen’s Where the Wild Things Are at New York City Opera

Mar. 30, 2011

Oliver Knussen’s Where the Wild Things Are is featured in a special concert performance at New York City Opera on April 9 at 1:30PM. Directed by acclaimed choreographer Sean Curran and featuring a cast of the fine Vocal Fellows from the Tanglewood Music Center, the matinee performance takes place at the David H. Koch Theater under the baton of Julian Kuerti. This concert is followed by New York City Opera’s Family Benefit, a fundraising event from which the proceeds go directly towards supporting their education program, Opera is Elementary, which served over 5,000 students in 2009-2010. The production features a unique visual element. Artwork, created specifically for this event by children currently in New York City Opera’s education program, is projected above the singers during the performance. The design concept was devised by Opera is Elementary in collaboration with the Rush Kids/Teens from Danny and Russell Simmons’ Rush Philanthropic Arts Foundation.

Originally commissioned by the Opèra National in Brussels, Where the Wild Things Are is based on the 1963 children’s book of the same title, written by Maurice Sendak, who also wrote the libretto. A fantasy opera in one act, spanning approximately 40 minutes, it was recently performed in concert at the 2010 Tanglewood Festival of Contemporary Music.
