RTÉ National Symphony Orchestra Debuts Gerald Barry's Humiliated and Insulted alongside works by Ann Cleare and Julian Anderson

The RTÉ National Symphony Orchestra debuts major new works by Gerald Barry and Ann Cleare this month, along with the Irish premiere of Julian Anderson’s The Discovery of Heaven. The performances take place at the National Concert Hall in Dublin, Ireland.

On February 10, Hans Graf leads the orchestra and the RTÉ Philharmonic Choir in the premiere of Barry’s Humiliated and Insulted. The work, for SATB chorus and orchestra, is co-commissioned by RTÉ and the Royal Scottish National Orchestra, who gives the work's UK premiere on May 5 and 6. The titled derives from that of an early novel by Dostoyevsky, published in 1861. Barry writes:

Typically extreme of Dostoyevsky, it’s not enough to be humiliated, you have to be insulted as well. There is a forensic, clean violence in Dostoyevsky which appeals to me. It was also delightful to have large bodies of people thunderously sing the title over and over again. It’s a privilege to have crowds at my disposal in that way. The music sounds like a church chorale on any given Sunday.

On February 14, Irish composer Ann Cleare receives the world premiere of her new concerto for contrabass clarinet, contrabass flute and orchestra, eyam v (woven), with clarinetist Carol McGonnell and flutist Richard Craig, led by Gavin Maloney. Paired with Cleare’s new work is the Irish premiere of Julian Anderson’s The Discovery of Heaven. Listen to the London Philharmonic Orchestra's podcast exploring Anderson's work:
